Tasting Notes

High Garden Pinot Noir 2023 exhibits a beguiling intense aroma of red primary fruits and dried herbs. This characteristic is unique in the Pinot world identifying Gibbston immediately. With a deep purple scarlet colour the wine is rich with layers of fine grape tannins in support. The natural fine acids typical of Gibbston are present in the background, giving the wine balance and structure with a modest level of alcohol.

Capable of development over decades the 2303 High Garden, like all the great Pinots, is delicious now. This vintage demonstrates the emerging consistency of this warm and sunny, distinguished vineyard site.
Unfined and unfiltered, this wine is also vegan-friendly.

Maker Notes:
The 2023 vintage demonstrates the consistency that can be achieved with Pinot Noir grown in a warm sunny site in Gibbston. This was the fifth vintage in which we were able to achieve long hang times with vintage occurring during the last week of April. Growing conditions varied during the year with warm sunny days and cool nights during mid summer followed by refreshing showers in early autumn. The labour intensive fruit triage (on each individual vine) took 3 days before picking began this year. High Garden Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023 Situated on the hillside at between 430 and 490 metres of altitude High Garden is one of the highest vineyards in Gibbston, Central Otago’s coolest sub region. It has great exposure to long sunshine hours. During the critical ripening month of April High Garden has sunshine for up to 90 minutes after sunrise before it reaches the bottom of the valley. The vineyard slopes down towards the north allowing for the free draining of both air, which minimizes frost risk, and water; although the vines are now dry land farmed.

Situated at between 430 and 490 metres of altitude High Garden is one of the highest vineyard in Gibbston with Three Colleens. The soils are composed of schist rocks in glacial loess with organic matter brought down the mountainside above over thousands of years. Planted in 2001 and 2002. Pinot Noir various clones (B667, B777, UCD5 and Abel). Size. Four hectares. Soils. Schist rocks in glacial loess with organic matter washed down from Mount Rosa immediately above, over millennia. Certified NZ Sustainable Vineyard. Dry land farmed with no irrigation during the year. Organic practices with native flowers and grasses supporting the bee population and the use of seaweed to promote soil health being just two examples. The vineyard is hand tended with great attention paid to canopy management and individual vine health in order to focus purely on grape quality. After multiple passes by the vineyard team during the growing season, with extensive thinning out of bunches at veraison, yields are kept low. This is in order to allow for full phenolic ripeness to be achieved over the longest possible hang time. In 2022 the yield averaged just 4.4 Tonnes / Hectaures (=28.5 hectolitres per hectare). No irrigation is needed (dry farming). Vineyard Manager: Gary Crabbe. Winemaker: Jen Parr
