Tasting Notes
2019 marked the comeback of Alan Brady to the Bannockburn region. This wine is crafted with organically sourced grapes from the Doctor’s Flat vineyard, which is located at one of the highest altitudes in Bannockburn. The high altitude provides an uplifting acidity, which is complimented with juicy black fruit and intriguing spices. Bannockburn came back for good to the Wild Irishman portfolio and showcases a mischievous and different perspective of Central Otago.
Nose: Powerful but restrained. Perfumed, violets, herbs, juicy, cherry, nice oak influence. Provides interest. Mountain air, mineral.
Palate: Dark fruits. Structured, red apple skin, creamy, blackcurrant, spice, mineral. Elegant but has power behind. Age worthy, great structure, long finish with huge potential.
Compared with Wild Irishman’s two other debut releases, the 2021 Doctor’s Flat Vineyard offers a sense of firmness, bold ness, and richness. Not only does it have a more brooding nose and flavour profile, which sits in the cherry fruit, aniseed and the mocha spectrum, but the wine’s structure displays richer depths. This is a Pinot Noir with muscle and an abundance of grippy veiled tannins. It is the most age worthy of the Wild Irishman trio and will require a little patience but it is already looking mighty fine. Just the third vintage of this wine, it is, in the words of fellow northern Irishman and comedian Frank Carson: ‘a cracker’.
