Central Otago Pinot Blanc at Kinross

Central Otago Wine Vs The World.....

by Francesco - Kinross Wine Advisor

Today, I’m excited to take you on a journey through Central Otago Pinot Blanc versus Alto Adige Pinot Bianco—two incredible expressions of this varietal from opposite sides of the world.

Climate: Central Otago vs. Alto Adige

Central Otago boasts a continental climate, with hot, dry summers and very cold winters. Similarly, Alto Adige in Italy enjoys a mild, alpine-influenced continental climate, featuring warm days averaging 30°C and cooler nights at 16°C. This day-to-night temperature difference in both regions plays a key role in concentrating the aromas and flavors of Pinot Blanc (or Pinot Bianco).

Soil: The Foundation of Flavor

In Central Otago, the soils are dominated by schist and glacial deposits, lending texture and minerality to the wines. In Alto Adige, soils are rich in limestone and quartz, particularly influenced by the Dolomites, which give their wines a unique minerality and finesse.

Flavour Profiles: Two Distinct Experiences

Central Otago Pinot Blanc: Expect vibrant stone fruit notes like peach and apricot, with hints of honey. The wines are beautifully balanced with refreshing acidity and a touch of minerality from the soil.

Alto Adige Pinot Bianco: Also leaning toward stone fruits but with more pronounced green apple, citrus, floral, and nutty characteristics, creating a crisp, elegant profile.
