Terrior of Wanāka wines | Tour of Central Otago Subregions

Wanāka: Central Otago’s Lakeside Wine Haven
A picturesque wine destination, nestled along the shores of Lake Wanāka, this small but stunning sub-region is one of Central Otago’s most beautiful and unique wine-growing areas. Wanāka benefits from a cooler climate, high-altitude vineyards, and the moderating influence of the lake, resulting in elegant, perfumed Pinot Noir with bright acidity and refined structure.
Although one of the smallest sub-regions in Central Otago, Wanāka has built a strong reputation for premium wines, boutique wineries, and breathtaking scenery. With a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of outdoor activities, it’s an ideal destination for those looking to combine wine, nature, and adventure.
Distance from Queenstown
Wanaka is approximately 70 kilometres (1 hour by car) from Queenstown via State Highway 6 and the Crown Range Road—New Zealand’s highest sealed alpine road.
The drive itself is a highlight, offering spectacular views over Queenstown, the Remarkables, the Crown Range and Lake Wanāka. It's worth stopping in at the Cardornda Distillery and/or the Cardonra Hotel pub on the way. In winter, the route can be challenging, but the alternative Cromwell-Wanāka route offers an easier, scenic option.
Terroir: Cool-Climate Elegance
Wanāka’s terroir is defined by its high elevation, lake influence, and mountainous surroundings, which create:
- A slightly warmer climate than Gibbston but cooler than Cromwell and Bannockburn.
- A long, slow ripening season, allowing grapes to develop delicate, complex flavors.
- Glacial and schist-based soils, providing excellent drainage and minerality.
These conditions result in Pinot Noir with a refined, delicate structure and bright acidity.
What Makes Wanāka Pinot Noir Special?
- Elegant, finely structured wines with vibrant red fruit flavors.
- Floral aromas, with hints of violets, lavender, and fresh herbs.
- Bright natural acidity, making the wines fresh, vibrant, and age-worthy.
- A mineral-driven finish that reflects the region’s glacial soils.
